80,000 milesafter $3,500 in purchases in the first 4 months
$99annual fee, waived for the first year
How it earns
Citi lists 2 AAdvantage miles per $1 on eligible American Airlines purchases, at restaurants including takeout, and at gas stations, and 1 mile per $1 on all other purchases.
Who it fits
- You fly American Airlines often enough to use the free first checked bag Citi lists on domestic itineraries, for you and up to 4 companions.
- You can spend $3,500 in four months on things you were going to buy anyway.
- You want miles in the AAdvantage program, not a flexible points currency.
Who should skip it
- You rarely fly American. The miles only help inside AAdvantage.
- You would have to stretch your spending to reach $3,500 in four months.
- You already received a bonus on a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum card. Citi says the bonus is not available if you have received a new account bonus for this card; read the full terms on its page.
Worth knowing
Citi's page shows 80,000 miles after $3,500 in the first 4 months. The $99 fee is waived for the first year and applies after that. The purchase APR is 19.74% to 29.74% variable, based on creditworthiness. The offer on Citi's page may not stay available if you leave it.
The advice on this page is general. It does not know your credit history, income or goals. Pay the balance in full each month, since interest costs more than any bonus is worth.
